Explore Bellingham’s Beautiful Chuckanut Drive

Five Ways to Explore Washington’s First Scenic Byway

If you ordered Washington’s State Scenic Byways either chronologically or on a scale of wonderfulness, Chuckanut Drive would always be first. Here are our suggested stops!

Get There

Hugging the shoreline just south of Bellingham, state Route 11 begins at Interstate 5’s exit 231 in Burlington and continues 20 miles north to Bellingham. This curving, two-lane road with limited shoulders has incredible, sun-sparkled views out to the San Juan Islands. You will enjoy old growth forests, adjacent state park lands and access to amazing hikes.

Oysters

Two options for fresh seafood are located right off Chuckanut drive. Taylor Shellfish Farms is a truly farm-to-table picnic. You can grill your oysters right at this seaside farm. The Oyster Bar on Chuckanut Drive is fine dining with a water view and great wines.

Larrabee State Park

Located at milepost 14 on Chuckanut Drive is Larrabee State Park. Set on the seaward side of Chuckanut Mountain near Bellingham, Washington’s first state park is known for its postcard views of Samish Bay and the San Juan Islands.

This unique camping park offers boating, paddling, fishing, shellfish harvesting, diving, teeming tide pools, and perfect spots for quiet contemplation, child’s play or a romantic date.

Hike Oyster Dome

One of the most popular hiking trails in Whatcom County, Oyster Dome is part of a network of trails on the southern part of the Chuckanut Mountains. The Oyster Dome trail starts from Chuckanut Drive near mile marker 10, located a few miles south of Larrabee State Park. Expect spectacular views.

Fairhaven Village

Chuckanut Drive ends in Bellingham’s Fairhaven Village, and is known for its Victorian-era, red-brick architecture, quaint shop and delicious restaurants. Find a community of craftspeople, unique local businesses, art galleries, restaurants, pubs and one of the best independent bookstores in the nation.
