5 Adventurous Vacations In Olympic National Park

When it comes to adventurous summer vacation options, there may be no better destination in America than Olympic National Park. Between its sprawling fairytale forests, awe-inspiring coastline and timeless old-growth trees, Olympic stands in a league of its own among national parks, and it’s right here in our backyard! With so many awe-inspiring attributes, it can be difficult to narrow in on the best activity for your visit. Luckily, as the #1 summer camp and adventure guide on the West Coast, we’ve done the research for you. Here are five of our favorite vacation options for the whole family.

The Ozette Coast

Olympic offers one of the most pristine and unique coastlines in the world, and the Ozette showcases it in breathtaking form. From towering offshore sea stacks to tidepools teeming with life, the area is ripe for exploration, and opportunity for an unforgettable hiking experience abound. If you’re planning on a shorter visit, the Ozette Triangle tour explores both the forest and the coast, and makes for an incredible day hike. Or, for a more immersive visit, our three-day Ozette Coast tour provides an easy, entry-level backpacking experience that delves deep into majestic shoreline, with camping, great food and plenty of priceless photo ops along the way!

Hoh Rainforest and the Blue Glacier

The Hoh Rainforest is one of America’s last-standing old-growth temperate rainforests and a must-see staple of any visit to Olympic National Park. Beyond its popular trails, the Hoh transforms into a secluded, lush and surreal landscape that transports travelers back in time. On the five-day backpacking tour of the Hoh Rainforest and the Blue Glacier, expert guides share all the secrets of this fairytale rainforest. We tour pristine high alpine lakes and meadows, and climb to the breathtaking overlook of the Blue Glacier. This hike offers an opportunity to explore the many different ecosystems within the park and see the variety of plants and wildlife that inhabit them. Warning: You will likely encounter deer, elk and bears!

Sol Duc and the Seven Lakes Basin

Home to Olympic’s most famous waterfall—Sol Duc Falls—the Sol Duc aquifer may be the most popular day hike in the park. But to fully take in all the beauty that this area has to offer, an overnight tour into the depths of Sol Duc provides a completely different experience. With this four-day backpacking tour of Sol Duc and the Seven Lakes Basin, guests will visit the famous Sol Duc waterfall, traverse the Seven Lakes basin, travel through incredible old-growth forests and view the park’s high alpine peaks all in one trip! This is one of our guides’ favorite itineraries, and after a short amount of time on its trails, it’s easy to see why.

The Grand Valley

Perhaps the most isolated and untouched terrain in all of Olympic, the Grand Valley tour is a journey for those seeking an authentic, immersive wilderness experience. On this six-day tour, guides lead travelers from high to low (meaning, lots of downhill hiking), visiting deep, riparian valleys and high, wind-swept ridges. Engulfed in montane forest and subalpine meadow, this trip showcases the lesser-seen views of the peninsula’s more rugged wilderness. The Grand Valley is our main destination, and it is aptly named—panoramic views abound from the Olympic Mountains to the Puget Sound. Altogether, this moderate backpacking trip is nothing less than “grand.”
