Rare Sighting

202109 YF Duck
Mandarin ducks, by Harry Chesman

Mandarin ducks are common to East Asia. But Lake Washington?

This past spring, Harry and Debbie Chesman heard about a Mandarin duck sighting in Kirkland and set out to see the bird for themselves. After several attempts over a week or so, the couple, who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, finally found this colorful male on Lake Washington.

“We decided to try Kirkland Marina Park, and at first glance we saw nothing but mallards,” says Debbie Chesman. “Suddenly I spotted a touch of orange color.”

Harry was quick to capture this special sighting.

Location: Juanita Beach Park, Kirkland, Washington
